Softball the 2 games opening/closing

I found the Softball double-header against Iowa State softball too be at times long, but also pretty fun… I really felt for the girls, because who ever heard of an opening day/ last game of the season before?
By long I mean the first game of the doubleheader went 8 innings scoreless. I can think of things which confuses me but with both teams going 16 times to get a run over the plate why cant they score, I guess I just do not understand. This game may have lasted 22 innings if not for a base runner starting at second base in the beginning of the inning. SDSU’s ace Jenna Marston went 9 strong in her last game one the mound this season, but could not hold the Cyclones as Alex Johnson (their A.J.) had a 2-RBI single up the middle.
The second game of the softball I was really zone in and was ready for a blog report, but I reported to the Spring game in the bottom of fifth so I missed the emotion of the 8-7 win. Although Dani Broshar did hit a two-RBI double with two outs to ensure SDSU’s Kiley Schwedhelm a win in her last game of her career.
I hope the softball team can get more games at home next year.

I was ready for some football...

Ariy-El Boynton
It’s official, on the day of the Spring Game I saw snow, therefore it truly was football weather! I could not see snow in or around Coughlin Alumni-Stadium, but felt I the wind at the SDSU spring football game, yesterday so did many fans-hence many of them leaving. There were some things that Stig and crew can take away from the game as pluses, although, he may have received a few headaches in the few hours which the scrimmage took place.
Let’s dive in the details…
The defense looked really good… and then again the offensive looked pretty bad (can I say awful?) As for the special teams, they did score more touchdowns (1) than the offense (0), but the kicking game- wind effected or not missed Parker Douglass.
Not only did the D prevent the O from the end zone, linebacker Isaiah Jackson got into the touchdown act- as he picked six (or 12 points in the spring game) as the defense beat the offense 40-23.
One of the strongest parts of any talented Stiegelmeier team is a strong offensive line, yesterday that did not show as the defensive line (Eric Schroeder, Steven Bazata, Brian Fischer and others) made work of an inexperienced O-line as the D forced six three-and-outs, good enough for 12 points.
Senior Quarterback Ryan Berry was not in prime-form (nobody was last night, even yours truly) but did complete a few passes and looked mostly for JaRon Harris who could burn a lot of defense this season did brake loose in the open filed.
The best news for the SDSU backfield is that there were no injuries, in the spring game the profanes of Kyle Minett, Adam Monke and Tyler Duffy were un uneventful as they were probably told just to run north and south.
The defense wearing the better-looking blue had one coach who was jumping around and being very dynamic. Who he was I do not know, but just think Stig was just an on-looker and Luke Meadows- offensive line and Assistant Coach- have been there before. As for this young coach his dream is I assume is to be a Head Football Coach, this was his chance. If I had the linebacker core that showed up yesterday I would be jumping around on the sideline also.
Jackson who ended the game with 8 tackles, Dirk Kool- 7 tackles (this guy is really good), Derek Domino (will give a lot of offensive lineman all they could handle next year)-7 tackles and Jimmy Rogers 5 tackles and a blocked punt (or he touched the punter) showcased a clinic.
As for those who were competing for Berry’s job they held their own. Corey Jeske a sophomore from Buffalo, Minn., show some good moves and might be the number two qb come the fall.
In the first quarter, (the scoreboard was not working at the start, as it was also in spring mode) on his first play from scrimmage with the offense down 7-2, Jeske faked to the run and then hit Alex Beyer a Tight End from Neenah, Wis., with a short pass which Bayer took the ball down the sideline for a 48 gain and the first note-worthy-play.
Jeske drove the ball to the 2-yard line finding Bayer again but the Jacks failed to get to the promised line and both kickers (Austin Lalich and Peter Reifenrath) missed their “chip-shot” field goal on the north side. Jeske went 8-of-11 passes and had about 115 yards. Transfer, Marcel Jones whose year according to gojacks.com is Unk, is that a ninth year senior? Had 75 yards and had nine balls caught out of 15 passes.
Hearing Stig talking to the radio inside the weather protected Press Box could be described as a tale of 2 coaches. At first he was chuckling at how savage the Defense was but then Laluch and Reifenrath (why can’t they be Parker or Farris- for spelling purposes that is) missed two easy kicks and the offense looked flat and then the mood seemed a little more surreal.
I only heard some grunts and “let’s go” from the offense late in the fourth quarter after three consecutive drives ended with a three-and-out. Veterans such as Harris and Glen Fox had decent games. But Teddy Shonka, Justin Mitchell and Brandon Gant showed good talent for the young guys.
In terms of tight ends, it is very hard to replace Chris Wagner and Matt Anderson from last year, although Beyer Luke Greving seemed up to the challenge.
The big question mark that turned out to be strength for defense was the secondary. Among those who graduated were Tyler Koch, Andy Hoogeveen and they will be missed. Although Adam Fritz, Brock Campbell, General Parnell, Joseph Blackman and Cole Brodie played ultra-tough but will need a lot of work before Iowa State Aug. 28.
One thing that Brodie did which was not recorded on the score sheet is return a punt for a touchdown. He had decent blocking but really all he did was just burn past guys. Since it was on Special Teams, no points were rewarded, for the first time in the history of football the return man should have gone at the 1-yard line in order to make an impact on the game.
Punter, Dean Priddy after two bad punts early had a decent day booting the ball. In the second half he had one punt land inside the 5-yd. line. If the Jacks have any chance to compete in the Gateway Football Conference, they must get the bounces. Not starting 0-3 for the third time in a row would go a long way for the relatively young squad.
So did the game mean anything? Well the players will get grades and have a laundry list of things to improve on, so yeah despite people complying about the spring game, its outdoor football in late April and under the lights, I loved it and it makes me hungry to see the Jacks play in the state which has the largest Amish community west of the Mississippi River. For those who are keeping score at home, its 118 days till Iowa State.
